Privacy Policy

Marking Buddy is built privacy-first, in line with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
The one thing that matters most
We never ask for or store real learner names.You identify learners only by your own private labels or initials (“Sipho M.”, “Table 3”). Only you know who those labels refer to. This is a deliberate design choice to minimise the personal information involved in marking.
What we collect
Your account: your name (as you give it), email address, the grade you teach, and an approximate class size. Your marking: the memos, preferences, script images you upload, the marks and comments we generate, and your corrections. Usage: counts of scripts and assessments marked, for fair-use limits and billing.
Script images
Script photos are stored in a private, access-controlled bucket that only your account can read. They are sent to our grading provider solely to produce the marks, and are processed transiently for that purpose. You can delete an assessment, or your whole account, at any time.
Who processes your data
We use Supabase (database, authentication and storage, hosted in the EU) and Anthropic (the Claude models that mark your scripts). Payments are handled by Paddle, our merchant of record. Each is a processor bound to handle data only as instructed. We do not sell your data or use learner work to train models.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, we erase your profile, assessments, scripts, notes and stored images. Deletion is available to you directly from Account settings.
Your rights
Under POPIA you may access, correct, or delete your personal information, and object to processing. The fastest route for access and deletion is the Account screen; for anything else, email privacy@markingbuddy.app.
Children's information
Marking Buddy is a tool for teachers. Because learners are referenced only by your private labels and never by real identity, we do not knowingly hold identifiable information about children.
